How to Choose the Right Dental Implant Provider
General dentist vs specialist, the questions to ask, credentials and technology to look for, and the red flags that should make you walk away.
For a single implant, an experienced general dentist is often fine. For full-arch, multiple implants, or low bone, choose a prosthodontist or oral surgeon. In every case, check credentials, before/after photos, 3D (CBCT) planning, and a written warranty before you commit.
General dentist vs prosthodontist vs oral surgeon
- General dentist: places straightforward single implants; many do this routinely.
- Prosthodontist: specialist in restoring teeth, ideal for full-arch and complex aesthetic cases.
- Oral surgeon: specialist in surgical placement, bone grafting, sinus lifts, and difficult cases.
Questions to ask before you commit
- How many implants like mine have you placed?
- Do you use 3D (CBCT) imaging to plan placement?
- What implant brand and crown material do you use?
- What is included in the quote (consult, surgery, abutment, crown, follow-ups)?
- What warranty do you offer on the implant and the crown?
- Is financing available?
